Paradise Perfection: A Guide to Resort Wear for Men

Summer is around the corner, and along with warmer temperatures comes the perfect opportunity to sport the epitome of casually cool style, resort wear.

The term is a straight to the point description of the effortless, yet nonchalantly cool approach to the warmer months. And not in a

dadcore type of way. Think beach clubs with condensation-draped Mai Tai’s and towering sandwiches. Resort wear provides a small taste of this lifestyle, although indulging in ten thousand-dollar retreats in the French riviera might still be off the table.

Swim trunks

The pièce de resistance of this style is the swim trunk. When done correctly, this can be the center of attention, and the real showstopper by the poolside.

When pairing it with a simple and plain top, why not seize the opportunity to go bold and be creative with colors and patterns? Very little expresses sophisticated nonchalance quite like a vibrant swim trunk. You also can’t go wrong with tropical or floral patterns. Flowers and palm trees are both great alternatives when done correctly.

If the larger prints feel too daring, smaller patterns can offer a more subtle look.

Fitment wise, the style we’re opting for is neither too large nor too tight. Ideally you would want the trunks to hug your legs well while showing off the hard-earned summer tan. Details such as an adjustable waist strap could also elevate the otherwise casual garment, while also bringing a functional element.

Tops

As for the tops, you would want something light and breezy to complement the swim trunk.

Heat is the keyword when it comes to tops. Lightweight materials such as cotton and linen ensure to keep you cool in both interpretations of the word.

Linen shirts might be the move when you want to add a bit of elegance. The casual, yet timeless piece will never not work, and it is a great way to make the outfit pop. To achieve the ultimate leisurewear look, roll up the sleeves and embrace the wrinkles.

Pique shirts are also a great alternative for the collar enthusiast. Classic brands like Ralph Lauren and Lacoste provide the preppy look that Felix Catton from Saltburn would applaud.

But we cannot talk about resort wear without the juggernaut of the genre, the terry cotton polo. The towel-like garment that – we’re not sure if whispers or screams – that you are familiar with the jetset life. But believe us when we say that it will let everyone know. Orlebar Brown is the undeniable go-to brand in this category, but Swedish OAS is also worth looking into.

Sunglasses

Undoubtably, sunglasses are the most effective, yet most effortless way to add character to an outfit and elevate it into an attire. Their dominant presence makes for a great opportunity to either further advance, or alternatively mute the rest of the ensemble.

For the more clean and classic option, you have the traditional Ray-Bans that you can’t go wrong with. Being a staple in a president’s wardrobe, to actors and pilots, they represent the quintessential American tough-guy option. And rightly so!

But as with the other apparel mentioned, dare to go wild. The resort is an exhibition, and it is no shame to be the main art piece.

For a less subtle look, there are plenty of options to choose from. Most brands offer a wide variety of frames for both the daring and conservative consumer.

Footwear

While walking barefoot might be the ideal choice, there are plenty of options to choose from when it comes to poolside-friendly footwear.

This is the part where comfort should not be neglected, and the importance of easy access can not be understated. If you’re not constantly switching between the pool and the sunbed, are you sure you’re doing things right?

For a classy feel, you can’t go wrong with a pair of espadrilles. The centuries-old fan favorites originate from sunny Spain, and are still to this date a summer staple. Go for a pair of fold-down heels if you don’t want to waste a valuable one second while undressing for the pool.

Flip flops and slides are also more than welcome at the resort, although your wife may have a point when advising you to leave them there for the evening dinner.
